Founded by Joseph Ansell in , Ansell and Son were originally maltsters and hop merchants but moved into the brewing business in The company was founded by Birmingham -born Joseph Ansell [pictured above] who married Elizabeth Dawson in and the couple took over a beer house called the Hope and Anchor, located in Fisher Street, Birmingham. Ironically, this pub would later form part of the Mitchell’s and Butler’s estate – the chief rival to Ansell’s in later years! Presumably, Joseph Ansell made sufficient money at the Hope and Anchor in order to set himself up in business. The census records the family residing on Aston’s Lichfield Road where Joseph is listed as a maltster and hop merchant employing three men. Eldest son Thomas was involved in the family business but Joseph worked as a solicitor’s clerk whilst William found employment as a gun finisher. The family business occupied part of the site on which the large brewery would later be developed. The company enjoyed early success and was able to construct new malt houses in addition to acquiring a second site at Moseley. Increased business was achieved by including hop merchants as part of the partnership activities. In what business guru’s today call a “forward extension strategy,” Ansell’s made the decision to move into brewing in

Historical Description Direct link to this section Shrewsbury is the capital of this county, a very ancient and flourishing town. It is pleasantly situated on the banks of the Severn, which encompasses it on all sides, except the north, and is generally supposed to have risen out of the ruins of a Roman city that stood either on the same spot or not far distant from it. The Britons called it Penguerne, that is, a brow of elders, there being many of them growing on the spot; and the Saxons called it Scrobbesbyrig, or a town encompassed with shrubs.
That this town is of great antiquity appears from various historical records. The first mention we have of it, however, as a place of repute, is in the reign of Ethelred the Second, when it was cruelly harassed by the Danes, who had gained a settlement in this part of the kingdom, and exercised the most horrid barbarities on the English.

Crossing the Irish Sea by the ‘Short Sea route’. One of the shortest crossings between Mainland Britain and Ireland is that between Portpatrick and Donaghadee. This is about 22 miles and the settlement of Scots in Ulster created traffic. The main traffic was not mail, but cattle on the hoof. John Smeaton improved the harbour at Portpatrick. In John Rennie senior was commissioned to examine improvements to the last-named.
Burns introduced steam vessels on the Glasgow to Belfast run and captured most of the traffic. In Burns stopped at Greenock to provide the Mail service and the mail stations at Portpatrick and Donaghadee were closed. The LNWR provided a train which left London in the evening and reached Belfast late in the following afternoon, but the service only ran on two days per week. Latest reviews Events in Shrewsbury 10 Places to Stay Almost an island, the historic town of Shrewsbury is surrounded on three sides by a loop of the meandering river Severn. It is not hard to see why a town was established and grew on this site at a time when attack from neighbouring groups or foreign invaders was often threatening. The water forms a natural defence to the east, south and west, while on the neck of land at the north is the highest of the two hills within the loop.
Probably in Saxon times people began to settle on the land within the river loop and the town of Shrewsbury or Scrobbesbyrig began to grow. The years after the Norman conquest saw the establishment of the Castle and Shrewsbury Abbey. Today the river loop still defines the town centre of Shrewsbury and within this natural limit, the main shopping and business area retains its ancient and intricate street pattern.
A maze of narrow passages, called shuts, criss-cross the town between the main streets. Together with a large number of magnificent black and white houses of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, these create a very distinctive, fine-looking and atmospheric town. The attractiveness of Shrewsbury’s historic streets and riverside setting is enhanced by a wealth of independent shops.
