If we don’t know about you, we can’t mention you – and be sure to see all the bands we have featured in the right hand column! As the title of this page might well suggest, this section is dedicated to other bands from Hartlepool, or Teesside, of which we have just one, or maybe two, photographs. Quite naturally, if you can help us find more, then a full webpage could well be provided for them and thank you for supporting our nostalgia pages and enjoying the sights, and sounds, of the sixties! The two gentlemen on the right are unknown, although one is probably Kathy Kirby’s manager. Another photo from Dave is of The Kravaats which can be seen lower down the page. The band Aquarius, from Hartlepool, outside the Wesley Church when it was still a place of worship in Since we created our page on The Milestones band member Trevor Middleditch has been in touch and says: This photograph was sent to us by Tom Ludley and came from Colin Hodgkinson’s private collection.
How do i put a date on a Vox AC30 with no serial number?
I was working as the editor of The Guitar Magazine in London, England, and started inquiring in gear circles for someone who might know a little more about this seemingly odd transition-period version of the little student model amp. There I was, a guest in the land of Vox, and yet all roads seemed to lead back overseas and all the way to the west coast of the United States, where resided, I was informed, not only an amp collector on a massive scale, but the ultimate authority on all things vintage-Vox.
The hardbound book is beautifully laid out and neatly typeset — given the kind of editorial respect that amp books were rarely afforded before the new millennium — with newly shot, high-resolution photos of over vintage Vox amplifiers, alongside numerous archive photos of the factories, personnel, artists and advertising images relevant to the tale.

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good.
It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all. The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly. Fender Bassman ’59 reissue Many Rockabilly guitarists play a ’59 Fender Bassman or similar – vintage or reissue. It sounds perfect for rockabilly.
The distortion which is where you get the right sound from changes dramatically with change of volume. That’s very impractically when you play live, where you have to adjust the volume after the size and acoustics of the place where you playing. I found a way to get around that and always have the same “Bassman-sound” no matter what volume I’m playing at Here’s a page with photos of some actual recording sheets where you can see how the SansAmp was set.
I play through my Fender Showman which has a very clean sound at all volumes. I then use the SansAmp GT2 pedal that can emulate the old Bassman as an insert between the amp and the guitar.

For a few short years in the mid s, the Vox name was everywhere. But the story of the s Vox guitars is complicated, with many different guitars made in different plants worldwide, often quite different from each other. JMI outsourced some production to two Italian factories, EKO in Recanati, and Crucianelli, primarily for the American market, and at it’s peak had a huge number of models available.
Eventually the UK factory ceased guitar production, and the last few Vox guitars available for several years, were the Vox Giant range guitars, made in Japan. Today, many of these rare guitars are highly collectable, with vintage Vox guitar values on the rise. They are loved for their crazy shapes and for their inbuilt guitar effects.
Have a listen to some vintage Vox soundclips. The various Vox manufacturers Vox guitars have been produced by various manufacturers in the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan; for convenience, you can split s Vox guitars into four main categories. Each had different components, and it is not too difficult to place a guitar in one of these groups, just by looking at controls, pickups etc. Later necks were imported from Italy, but even with an Italian neck, these are regarded as the British Voxs.
Unable to cope with worldwide demand, a second plant ‘West Street’ was opened nearby in , but was badly damaged by fire in January So Vox imported a range of guitars from Italian manufacturer Crucianelli. Furthermore, demand for solid body UK models was so high that certain guitars were produced simultaneously in Britain and Italy primarily by Eko of Recanati. Italian Phantoms from this period have some differing components and constructiom from their British-built counterparts.

Still, the song that brings out the enthusiastic grin on most of us is of course Dogs. Dogs dates back to the middle of the Dark Side of the Moon tour. David wrote most of the music later stated that he was particularly proud of the chord progression. The earliest version even had a long choir part in the middle section, similar to what David and Richard used to do on the 4-piece live version of Atom. Throughout the tour Roger would rewrite the lyrics several times as David found it too hard to sing — there were just too many words Musician, August

What to do with a dead one The Thomas Vox solid state amplifiers are notorious for their poor reliability. I love the way these amplifiers look and sometimes the way they sound and in fixing a couple that I have, I came up with several things that should make them vastly more reliable, and possibly sound better. There are also a lot of tips here on how to get a dead one running again.

In electronics, a vacuum tube U. For most purposes, the vacuum tube has been replaced by the much smaller and less expensive transistor, either as a discrete device or in an integrated circuit. However, tubes are still used in several specialized applications such as guitar amplifiers also called a valve amp outside the U. Operation Vacuum tubes, or thermionic valves, are arrangements of electrodes in a vacuum within an insulating, temperature-resistant envelope.
Although the envelope was classically glass, power tubes often use ceramic and metal. The electrodes are attached to leads which pass through the envelope via an air tight seal. On most tubes, the leads are designed to plug into a tube socket for easy replacement. The simplest vacuum tubes resemble incandescent light bulbs in that they have a filament sealed in a glass envelope which has been evacuated of all air. When hot, the filament releases electrons into the vacuum: The resulting negatively-charged cloud of electrons is called a space charge.
These electrons will be drawn to a metal “plate” inside the envelope if the plate also called the anode is positively charged relative to the filament or cathode. The result is a current of electrons flowing from filament to plate.

Vox Amp Date of manufacture?
The Guitar-organ was a Dick Denney creation that combined the mechanical elements of a Phantom guitar with the oscillators of a Continental electric keyboard. And Vox has certainly got it. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Vox amplifiers must feel flattered to pieces here in their sixth decade. Musicians of the day were gagging for gigworthy, home-grown products amidst a dry period for quality that was exacerbated by a ban on the importation of U.
There is an element of truth to that, although the claim is also a bit misleading. To clarify, while Fender, Gibson, Valco, and other manufacturers were producing amps from adaptations of circuits found in the applications handbooks that tube manufacturers such as RCA, G.
This is THE definitive Vox Book. If you have a Vox amp, are restoring a Vox amp, are interested in Vox amps servicing a Vox amp, Or Are going to sell, list, or trade a Vox.
Apr 21, There are other visual clues. Let’s start with the control panel: Most of them, older and newer, have “A Vox Product” print in them right somewhere in the corner. Except for that supposedly late ‘s amp Chambonino, right? Layout wise one of the reasons why they made a choice to get rid of it is making room for a sixth preamp tube. How did they solve this in your amp?
Does it have six preamp tubes or five? Does the tube rectification even look like Vox factory job, where they likely would have used the usual rectifier mounting hole, which they still left to amps that used silicon rectifiers. Second clue is a very basic one:
