If Waxman had perhaps focused more completely on the artistic side of bringing the films into being, this would have been an easy five-star winner. However, I got bogged down in the budget numbers and the endlessly rotating cast of studio figures—how can a reader be expected to commit an executive’s name to memory when, two paragraphs later, they’ve been shuffled out of a job and into the historical dustbin? Regardless of the flaws in the book, I can’t recommend it highly enough for anyone who is a fan of the six directors. Or even just three of them. Highly recommended for those interested in film. Hollywood had blown itself out of proportion with excess.
Spike Jonze blogs
Published onethink May 17 I don’t quite trust Charlie Kaufman: But while his films are clever, I’m not convinced they’re interesting. Maybe my big problem with Adaptation.
1. I didn’t really give Spike Jonze’s latest film Her a second thought after seeing it last weekend. The film, about Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) falling in love with his operating system Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), is a sweet, charming, handsome, and ultimately vacuous exercise in twee melancholy.
Like every love story, there are complications and moments of great joy that mix together to showcase a heartfelt bond amongst the characters. What makes this OS special is that it has a conscience. Out of its five Oscar nominations, the film deserves its praise for Best Motion Picture. Jonze knows exactly which angle and lens to film from in order to put the audience into this beautifully tragic movie. He gets up close and personal to capture every emotion Phoenix portrays and finds a way to also show the essence of Johansson.
Jonze is able to allow the audience to experience every aspect of this film and feel as if they are part of this futuristic life and romance. It allows the audience to swoon and ache by remembering moments in their own lives when they have felt both love and pain. Featuring songs written and preformed by Arcade Fire and an original song, sung by Scarlett Johansson, music plays a big role in this film.
It allows the audience to feel and move with every second of this relationship. Theodore and Samantha also share a unique bond through the power of the music they write for one another.

Spike Jonze Her A Voices Review. Dear God. I didn’t see that ending coming. I have just seen Spike Jonze latest film, “Her”. It floored me. This isn’t what I expected at all.
The demand to be a knowable, self-aware, and authentic self thwarts many a friendship, love affair, and intimate conversation, and yet we continue to turn to the self-help aisle or Oprah to learn to be better at expressing and knowing ourselves. When that fails, we lament that we are misunderstood, unheard, and unmet by the other.
This disappointment suggests that there is a transparent, authentic, and real self that needs recognition and mirroring. But this self is, I believe, a product of the neoliberal economization of the self, in which human capital becomes another site of investment and entrepreneurial ventures. To begin to think through what depersonalized intimacy looks like, we can turn to representations of couplings between organism and machine, because they offer a model that is not invested in who or what self and other are, ontologically.
If one of the selves is automated, then friendship, love, and communication may function very differently from the normative paradigms of relationships and open up new possibilities for encounter and intimacy. Depersonalized intimacy accepts that in a relationship neither entity fully knows itself or why it acts the way it does and thus, of course, will not ever fully know the other. So much of what informs who we are and how we are with others is inaccessible to us.
Songs About Love in the Digital Age
Or, put a different way, if you told your computer that you love it, would you believe that it would understand your meaning? Yet, what if the above questions are cast forward several decades, what would the responses be to the questions of love and being loved in a period when the devices that people carry at all times feature advanced if unambiguous artificial intelligence?
On the surface the film may appear to be fundamentally a love story, albeit not an overly saccharine one, mixed with a vaguely tragic aspect yet safely couched in comedic territory. The truth; however, may be that treating Her as a love story is to approach the film in a manner that pre-disposes one to accept many of the films most troubling aspects. If Her is a love story, than it is a tragedy, but the tragedy is not for the protagonist it is for humanity.
Which is another way of saying that, ultimately, Her should be thought of as a horror film.

Spike Jonze has in my opinion always been one of the coolest directors working in Hollywood. He just seems like an awesome guy to hang out with, eat a slice of Brooklyn pizza with, and maybe have.
Jesse Dittmar Editor’s Note: Magazine announced its pick for Company of the Year on Monday, November Few companies have expanded as aggressively and in so many different directions as Vice Media has in It expanded an existing relationship with red-hot cable channel HBO. Vice declined to participate in this article. Media organizations like The Washington Post owner Graham Holdings Company has long owned companies outside of the traditional media spectrum–for instance, testing company Kaplan and home health-care provider Celtic Healthcare.
However, Vice is different. Licensing of original TV content to domestic and international networks has reportedly helped the company increase its profit margins dramatically.
