Let me start by saying, there are good single mothers in our society and I applaud those women. They work tirelessly, with little or no help, to see that their children are provided for and well rounded. The sacrifices they make for their families cannot be measured in any lifetime. This clarion call is not about those women. This is about the numerous modern day single moms who set their sons on a sure path of rebellion, disrespect and dishonor. Most of those boys will grow up to be unproductive men in our society. For irrefutable proof one only needs to examine: The high school drop out rate amongst boys from single-family homes. The incarceration statistics for boys raised by single moms. Am I attacking or demonizing single mothers?

Meg Meeker Men, we need you. We—mothers, daughters, and sisters—need your help to raise healthy young women. I have listened hour after hour to young girls describe how they vomit in junior high bathrooms to keep their weight down. I have listened to fourteen-year-old girls tell me they have to provide sex acts that disgust them in order to keep their boyfriends.
You’re not likely to stumble upon a more selfless or loving guy than one who has raised his kiddos on his own or mostly on his own. But hey, don’t take it from us, take it from the guys themselves. We recently asked a handful of single dads to give us their best elevator pitch for dating one of their brethren. See what they had to say below. He’s going to take things slow. You know that guy you got coffee with once who subsequently badgered you with requests to hang out for weeks on end?
Most single dads are not that guy. Single dads don’t have time to be that guy. In fact, if they’re doing it right and many are , there’s no question in this world about who the most important person or persons in the galaxy are. Image via iStock Rule 2: Know the Difference Between Expectations and Standards Standards are the things you must have in a relationship—mutual respect, attraction, fun, etc. Expectations, however, set you up for disappointment, and they blind you when you’ve got something good. What I’m trying to say is this: Prioritize the things that are important to you in a relationship, and then keep those in mind.
It’s good to hold the guy you’re dating, single parent or not, to high standards—he should treat you well and make you feel good about yourself, yet it’s not good to throw away a healthy relationship because you expect to have a monopoly on his free time or expect his kids to adore you immediately.

As a child of a divorce , I’d always sworn that I’d never put my kids through that — yet as it turned out, living paycheck to paycheck and trying to do our own growing up while raising a family proved to be too great a strain on our marriage: It bent, cracked, and finally broke. I flew through the first couple of months after our separation in an adrenaline-powered blur.
But things like finding a place to live and paying for it all by myself, taking care of almost all the day-to-day parenting of two small children, and trying to find a job when I’d been out of the workforce since college terrified me. I felt like a flake — not a strong, capable mother who was going teach her children to succeed despite the obstacles ahead.
Even if my husband and I didn’t get along, we were both still deeply invested in the minutiae of running our family. Then one day, my best friend and co-parent was gone from my life. Though I had always paid lip service to the “It takes a village” idea, it turned out that, while there might have been some “village” people out there, we had been too wrapped up in our own lives to get to know them.
It really hit me one Friday night.

In November, it will be two years since my mother died after a prolonged illness. My father started dating a woman this summer. I supported him finding companionship. He and Mom were together for 35 years, so it had been a long time since he was alone. Unfortunately, I have not dealt well with the reality of his girlfriend. He wants to include her in all of our family gatherings and has told me that he expects me to become friends with her.
My mom and I were very close before she got sick and got even closer during her illness, so this feels like a violation to me in so many ways. I have tried to explain to Dad that I am not comfortable with this but he seems to not care. I feel like I am alone in this, and it is very hard for me to be a grown up about it. Ever since we lost Mom, I have felt like I no longer belong in my family, and this just makes it worse.
